Chargeable weight is a parameter used in the transport and logistics industry to determine the weight that a shipment will be quoted and billed by. It's the higher result of comparing the actual weight vs. the volumetric weight, since carriers need to know whether the cost of a shipment will be determined by the actual weight or the dimensions of the package.
The actual weight of a package is the weight of the product including its packaging.
The volumetric weight corresponds to a package's weight based on its dimensions, and it's calculated with the following formula: Height x Width x Length / 4000.
Now, an example... If you want to ship a package that weighs 0.800kg and you pack it in a box that's 10cm tall, 30cm wide, and 40cm long. The volumetric weight of this package will be calculated based on its packaging, so it works out as follows:
(10cm height x 30cm width x 40cm length) / 4000 = 3kg
So in this case: the actual weight of the package is 0.800kg and the volumetric weight is 3kg. Therefore, the chargeable weight will be 3kg.
